Here is the Webster's New World College Dictionary definition of a mermaid and a merman:

1.   mer·maid (murīmãdī) n. [ME mermayde: see MERE2 & MAID]   1 an imaginary sea creature with the head and upper body of a beautiful woman and the tail of a fish  2 a girl or woman who swims well

2.   mer·man (murīman) n., pl. -menī (-menī) [ME mereman: see MERE2 + MAN]   1 an imaginary sea creature with the head and upper body of a man and the tail of a fish  2 a man or boy who swims well

The merpeople might best possibly be described as a race of amphibious beings.  Some say mermaids constantly or purposely are getting themselves caught in fishermen's nets while others appose that notion saying that they are to intelligent and agile to allow themselves to be caught.  Both genders are human form the waist up in proper portions and two large tail flukes at the end of their tails.  And although they can turn their tails into to legs in or out of the water the main difference between humans and merpeople is that they have no soul.

Most mermaids are notorious for being strikingly beautiful as well as vain.  Always with long tresses ranging in color from blond to light brown to strawberry blond.  Eyes normally varying in different shades of greens and blues.  Their skin tone as always perfect immaculately pearly white with a silvery sheen when they are in contact with sea water.  On rear occasions merchildren will spend too much time at too young of an age out of water causing a light but permanent case of freckles to develop over night.

While mermen are known too be very muscular and seaworthy.  They are also very gentle and kind with soft charters.  That is unless provoct or put in a position to protect themselves, another of their kind, or a land maiden whom they have found favor with.  Unlike the female gender the males prefer short to medium length tresses and the older generations sometimes even growing long beards.  Pending on their station or status the older mermen will make five braids out of their beards and weave in ornaments or other small items.
